Individual Therapy
My Approach
I believe that therapy should be an enjoyable process, even if it contains challenging moments and feelings. You have worked hard to make it to this point and deserve to experience ease in the therapy room.
We’ll combine talk therapy with techniques to calm the nervous system so you can experience more peace in your body and mind. We’ll consider how your family system has impacted you over your life, and how your relationships can better contribute to your wellbeing.
I am a trained EMDR therapist and draw from motivational interviewing, systemic family therapy, and expressive arts therapies. I offer therapy to young adults, adults, and elders.
As a therapist in a fat body, I also prioritize a body liberation, Health at Every Size, and disability justice approach.
Most of all, it’s important to me that you find the right therapist for you. Reach out and we’ll discuss the possibilities together.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a specialized, evidence-based therapy for processing negative memories and reducing distress. It uses eye movement or rhythmic tapping to engage both sides of the brain, allowing the fight/flight/freeze response to subside and to make way for more positive coping skills and beliefs.
It was originally developed in the 1980s to treat PTSD in Vietnam Veterans, and since then has been used in the treatment of many mental health issues. If you have memories that continue to negatively impact the way you view yourself or the world, EMDR could be useful for you.
I can also coordinate with your existing therapist to supplement your work with a series of EMDR sessions.
What about regular talk therapy?
Your therapy treatment is a collaborative process and we will figure out the best approach together. Over the first few sessions, we’ll get to know each other, discuss what you are coming to therapy for, and come up with an initial plan. We can always add in EMDR later if you decide you are interested.
We might focus on goal-oriented therapy (aimed at making concrete change in your life with tangible action steps in between sessions) or insight-oriented therapy (aimed at connecting the dots between your feelings, behaviors, memories, and family/cultural systems) or a mix of the two! We might also incorporate expressive arts, using writing, drawing, music, or movement.
